Two years later, he launched his famous show, “Je, Huu ni Ungwana?” which is still published on KBC radio, making it the longest-running program in the field for over 55 years. In 1967, he spent a year training as a journalist at the British Broadcasting Corporation in London.

In 1982, during a failed coup to remove President Daniel arap Moi, Leonard was taken captive and made to declare on live TV that the military had taken over and the president was no longer in power. The General Service Unit and regular police, under Major General Mahamoud Mohamed, later regained control of the situation. Leonard was then instructed to state that the rebels had been defeated and that the president was back in charge.

He retired in 2022, holding the record as Kenya’s longest-serving broadcaster, with 58 years on the air.
