Maxey was anticipated to be picked early in the 2020 NBA Draft; however, to the astonishment of many, he was still on the board later in the first round. The Philadelphia 76ers appointed him with the 21st overall pick in the draft. On December 3, 2020, he formally executed his rookie contract with the 76ers.
He made his NBA debut on December 23, scoring six points. Fast forward to October 28, 2022, when he set a personal record with 44 points, making 15 of 20 shots and 9 of 12 three-pointers in a 112–90 win against the Raptors.
